Greetings all. We have a couple that would like to buy two of our kids. After reading about goats they are concerned about the number of cherry and plum trees in the goat pasture. Will the goats know better than to eat the leaves as they do with other things that are poisonous to them?

We do not have stone fruit trees in our yard but we do have other things that they shouldn't eat and they avoid them.
Thanks,

I have heard this is a seasonal problem over winter/spring and yes all my goats have got some lice with a couple of my goats having alot of them. They are not rubbing themselves but I can see them in their coat when I groom them. I think they are the biting kind rather than the sucking kind as I cannot see any blood droppings in their fleece.

Anyway as some of them are pregnant and lactating and as I have been told you can never get rid of them completely, does anyone have a recommended lice repellant?

The vet is happy to give me something to inject them with, but wondered if there are any good alternatives.

I read somewhere else that you can use flea powder for kittens, but wanted some advice before I have a go.

OK, so the time came to separate my two kids as we had a doe and a buck. Poor Michael - now to live his lonely, lonely life as a buck. But that is another tale....

So, Sarah is 5 months old. Bottle fed; long weaned. We put her in the paddock with her mother, Pricilla whom we are milking and her sister Abigail. Abigail is Pricilla's from her last litter (is litter correct?) So after about two weeks in Sarah starts nursing again. This is not good for our milking....I have no earthly clue why. She is well fed. Has plenty of hay and gets some grain twice a day. Plus apples and carrots as "goat treat." Did I mention I spoil my goats?

They are very scheduled as to when they go into and out of the barn for milking, etc.

Abigail is not very fond of Sarah. We have bred Abigail and hope she is pregnant. She is a year old.

We bought an udder harness from Hoeger's for Pricilla to try and keep Sarah from nursing.

Any other suggestions? And any ideas why this is happening?

Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to all!
Thank you!

It is moldy and full of dried, dead mushrooms. \

So the breeder said I should put one strand of electric wire at the top of my 4 ft. no climb fence and one in the middle. She said her goats get extra huge and will push on fences, thus bending them. I have never used an electric fence and was wondering if any one has suggestions. The corral is about 125 ft. away from electricity.... Thanks in advance. If I can order this online let me know too.

The man I bought my baby from seems to be kind of an idiot. He has some good ideas, but some things just don't seem right. I have had my Bianca (the goat) for two weeks now. I got her at four days old, and am busy bottle feeding her. The breeder told me to give her whole cows milk. So that's what she's been on. Is this good? Also, he wasn't clear on how to wean her, so if you have any advice on that, it would be appreciated. The breeder also says I only need to trim her hooves every couple of years, but every web site I've read says every couple months. My biggest question is about de-horning. I have heard that any way you do it, is painful to the kid. Anything you have to tell me will be wonderful. I have read hours of stuff on the internet, but it will be so much more comforting to know that I can come and ask you guys!! P.S. at two and a half weeks old, Bianca already loves hiking, playing with her dog friends, and chasing around my three year old son. It has been a wonderful experience for our family so far!!!! Thank you, Sam

It's a good thing we were there, because she had a hard time getting him out (see photo!)
I am David, the moderator of this tribe. I didn't realize that I had my settings set without updates, so I thought the tribe was dormant since I wasn't getting any notices of new posts. Just checked on the tribe today and am pleasantly suprised to see new members and posts, and new photos! Nice to see!

I have a small herd which I raise on open mountain range in santa barbara (southern ca). It used to be just nubians, but now I have a few other breeds mixed in and who knows what this seasons offsping is going to look like. The herd includes a barbados sheep mating pair, a miniture goat male, and one male with short ears (not sure the name of that breed) and the rest are nubians.

If anyone is interessted in info on raising goats in a wilderness setting without fences, let me know.

At first I was worried that they would wander off, but they are acting like dogs and hanging around.
