OK, ha, a friend pointed me towards this tribe, and it's great!
I'm on a "shortlist" being considered for a job as a part time goat herder in San Francisco. Nifty, fun good times, etc.
sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/etc...059.html
As much as I'm enthusiastic, I think goats are awesome, and am willing to get covered in goat spit- I don't really know anything about goats. (Thankfully, that's not a requirement)
Can you folks give me any wisdom that might help me get the job? Suggestions? Thanks!!

Re: Goat herder...advice
Wed, November 7, 2007 - 11:51 AMMy advice to her was to show up in a dirndle. She'd stand out, and I mean all serious goatherds wear them, so they'd know that she really wanted it. Hey, I saw Heidi!!
<running from the angry goatherds now> Just kidding!! Maaaa-aaaa-aaa!!
Goats are wonderful! I hope that they pick you HeatherLyn!!! -

Wed, November 7, 2007 - 2:09 PMsweet job!
Hmmm, I think you should probably learn a tiny bit about goats, just in case they ask questions.
I would also focus on the quality time of being alone with the animals and knowing its an environmentally awesome-friendly alternative to pesticides and insecticides.
Are you serious about wanting the job? I wonder if you'll be putting up the temporary fences and driving a pumper truck to bring them water. They are probably used on the worse slopes ever, something a normal weed whacker couldn't get too. -

Re: Goat herder...advice
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 6:36 AM........goats act like dogs...but they think like cats. Would you take on such in a sheltered 'rescue' environment? Now think about the likelihood you'll have to create containment yourself, as well as do nurturing activity. I work with mentally disabled adults who are prone to exhibit asocial behaviors when....bored. Similar prospect likely with your job...
......a bored goat is an evil goat.
Still, if you wanna go for it, we're here to support you....up here in the bleachers...eatin' cracker jacks ;)

Re: Goat herder...advice
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 8:17 AMAs far as I can puzzle out- it's a small herd of goats that's used currently at a waste facility, and the goats are used to keep the weeds on the train tracks and other areas under control. (With possibility for expansion?).
I am serious about wanting the job, and am doing my crash course on Goat this week. I just thought I'd pop in for some personal advice from the Goat Peoples. :-) -

you don't know how true this is!!!! lol!!!!
and a hungry goat is a sad sight, when they get finished with the good stuff and forced to eat the yucky weeds they don't really want to eat, they get grumpy -

I think that's what they were, for the most part. They were "rescue goats" from various places, from what I gathered.
It was interesting, but the guy was looking for way more commitment than he'd originally expressed in his ad. Something about wanting to also get a bunch of dairy goats and make cheese or something..... (and you have to milk them 2x day? Doesn't sound part-time to me!).
So, no goat herding for me. -

Re: Goat herder...advice
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 12:28 PMaww, sorry about that
Its so weird how people want to expand there farming operations and all the while they want to sub out the work. Yes you would need to milk them twice a day and you can't use dairy goats for brush control, the milk will have a strange taste. They need to be fed special diets for high yields
